# Your Car Park System Lives on One Old PC. Here's How to Protect It Without Rewriting It

If your car park runs on a fee system that was built around 2010, there is a good chance it lives on **one PC in the back office**. It works, your staff know it, and nobody wants to touch it. The risk is that the day that PC fails, so does your income.

We recently helped a Hong Kong car park operator in exactly this position. This is what we did, in plain terms.

## The situation

* The parking fee system is a web application that needs **Windows 7**, **Internet Explorer** and a **1024 x 768** screen.
* It runs on a single desktop PC. One hard drive. One power supply.
* Rewriting the software would mean new screens, new training and a risky switch-over, and the operator only wanted to keep what already works.

## The approach: copy the whole PC, don't rewrite the software

Instead of replacing the system, we copied the entire PC, disk and all, into a **virtual machine** on a managed server. To the staff it is the same computer, the same login screen and the same data. Underneath, it no longer depends on one aging machine.

## What stayed the same, and what changed

| | Before | After |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| Software | Existing parking fee system | **Same system, same login screen, same data** |
| Where it runs | One office PC | A virtual machine on a managed server |
| If the hardware fails | The system goes down with it | The virtual machine can move to other hardware |
| Safety net | None | **Original left untouched as a fallback** |
| Rewrite needed | n/a | **None** |

## What went wrong, and how it was handled

The first start-up stopped with a Windows boot error. The disk copy itself was healthy, so we repaired the start-up files from a Windows rescue disc, shut the machine down cleanly, and it then started normally and reached the login screen. Because the original was never modified, there was no risk to the live system while we did this.

## Is your parking system a candidate?

This approach tends to fit when:

1. The system works, but runs on one old PC (or an unsupported version of Windows).
2. The vendor is gone, or a rewrite is too expensive or too risky.
3. You want to keep the same screens so staff need no retraining.
4. You want a fallback copy before anything changes.

If that sounds like your car park, we can look at it with you first, with no commitment.
